Mel is another famous actor who also served in WWII, and he was in the thick of it. In this interview Mel discusses the Army sending him to Virginia Military Institute and later Ft. Sill, Oklahoma before sending him to combat in Germany. It seems the Germans took issue with him crossing their river and coming on their side of the bank. In this interview you'll hear him discuss how he used humor to help ease the rigors of combat. Neat fact he commandeered General Von Rundstedt's car and used it to tool around in with a pretty German lady driver as he entertained troops after the German surrender.
