Karl Thayer Soule was a 2d lieutenant in the Marine Corps during World War II, participating in the campaigns in Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. He served in the 1st Marine Division as the assistant division intelligence officer for photography.
In this album, the first caption is the official Marine Corps caption. When available, the lower captions are transcribed from an oral history he sent to the Marine Corps Archives with the photographs, recorded in 1993. Soule retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, and died in 2006.
