The flag raising on Mount Suribachi stands as one of the most enduring images of World War II. This image has been represented on everything from stamps to bumper stickers, while the battle of Iwo Jima itself has been the subject of countless movies and books. The U.S. victory came with huge cost however as it was the only battle in the Pacific where more U.S. Marines were lost that Japanese defenders. Herschel "Woody" Williams is the last surviving (at the time of this post) Medal of Honor winner from the battle of Iwo Jima.
