My Top Ten Favorite WWII Movies

9990643854?profile=RESIZE_584xThere was a recent Tweet on Twitter that listed someone's Top Ten War movies. I think that is hard to pare down, so I'd like to offer my favorite Top Ten WWII movies, in no particular order. And yes, TV mini-series do count.  \:-)

1. The Great Escape - A classic and my all-time favorite.

2. Band of Brothers (HBO) - Modern-day classic that I watch at least once per month.

3. The Pacific (HBO) - A close second to B.o.B. Very emotion-packed series.

4. Enemy at the Gates - Rich history of the Eastern Front's horrors.

5. Schindler's List - The Holocaust. Speechless.

6. The Pianist - Another modern-day classic that will leave you in tears.

7. Kelly's Heroes - Goofy but wonderful, and the best cast ever. (woof-woof!)

8. The Dirty Dozen - Classic Lee Marvin, who was a WWII Marine who fought and was wounded at Saipan.

9. They Were Expendable - Johnn Wayne and that classic beauty Donna Reed.

10. Sands of Iwo Jima - Another John Wayne classic featuring a few WWII Marines (in brief cameos) who fought at Iwo Jima and Tarawa.

There are many I left out, but these ten I could watch over and over again. Which are your favorites?

- Scott

So many great WWII and WWII-era movies, so here are 11-20 of my favorites. In no particular order.

    11. The Imitation Game - Excellent film and true story about Alan Turing and Bletchley Park. Should have been in my Top Ten above.

    12. Stalag 17 - Classic 1953 POW movie filmed in black-and-white. All-star cast.

    13. The Bridge on the River Kwai - Setting and location is one of the stars here. A long film but worth it on this underappreciated theater of war.

    14. Saving Private Ryan - From 1998. Admiring Tom Hanks' interest in the Second World War. He of course behind Band of Brothers and The Pacifc.

    15. Valkrie - A very good movie based on true events of Nazi leadership's attempts to kill Hitler.

    16. Stalingrad - Excellent moive of War on the Eastern Front, filmed in Russian with English subtitles. Well worth the watch.

    17. Tora! Tora! Tora! - From 1970, and the attack on Pearl Harbor.

    18. Dunkirk - Insight into the evacuation.

    19. Das Boot - From 1981. You've got to love submarine movies.

    20. In Harm's Way - Classic film about the U.S. Navy in WWII. Stars John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, and Patricia Neal from 1965.
